Island Spotlight: Jonathan Blum of Bad Martha Beer

To help bring some Island-life to our guests who may be missing the Vineyard, we are launching a series of conversations featuring some of our favorite Martha’s Vineyard small businesses and organizations. And some, are just right outside our door!
 
We proudly serve Bad Martha’s on tap at The Dunes and new this season, we will be doing informal beer tastings from Bad Martha’s and others.
 
Here we’ve asked, owner and founder, Jonathan Blum, of Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery, located right here in, Edgartown, and a short bike ride from the Winnetu, a few questions about the Brewery.

HOW DID BAD MARTHA FARMER’S BREWERY GET STARTED?
 
I love really good local craft beer, and was looking for something fun to do when retiring from my corporate job. The island needed a craft brewery, and we’re now the only one. We built a beautiful post and beam barn on Upper Main Street in Edgartown, installed 7-barrel brewery system, use local ingredients in our beers, give all our spent grains to local farmers for livestock, and donate a percentage of our profits to island charity, especially hunger relief. 
 
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE ISLAND?
 
My wife and I had vacationed on the island as youngsters, and then we bought our first home in Edgartown in 1989. We still have that home today, and raised our two sons in it seasonally since they were just a few months old. We moved to the island full time in 2013, the year we opened Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery.
 
A LITTLE ABOUT THE BEER
 
We make all our own beer right at our Farmer’s Breweries in Edgartown, and now in Falmouth, where we opened our second Farmer’s Brewery in September 2019. We have our own canning line, and sell pints, flights, crowlers (32 oz cans) and growlers (64 oz bottles). We’re opening a kitchen this summer, where we’ll be serving artisan pizzas, along with our local cheese, charcuterie and veggie platters. We buy many ingredients from local farms and grow some of our own hops on our patio. My favorite two beers are Shark Bite, a Jalapeño Cucumber Lager made with local farm produce, and Honey Helles, made with Martha’s Vineyard organic honey. 
 
FUN FACT
 
We have a life size sculpture sitting at the bar at our Farmer’s Brewery of Bad Martha, a brunette mermaid with a bit of an attitude and a “Bad” tattoo on her arm. Everyone who visits and takes a selfie with her gets a free “Bad” or “Get Bad” rub-on tattoo, and we’ve given away nearly a quarter million of them since we opened in 2013!!! It’s so much fun seeing young and old people alike wearing our “Get Bad” tattoos!
