Who We Are

For more than a century, vacationers have flocked to Katama for beach days, clambakes, refreshing breezes, and other timeless summer fun. Since 1968, we’ve carried on this tradition of hospitality in our corner of the island, bringing the personal and hospitable touch that only a family-owned and operated resort can offer.

Mattakeset Lodge

Before the days of air conditioning, the old Mattakeset Lodge was an ideal place to spend the summer months. Opened in the 1870s, the Lodge was popular for its clambakes, dances under the stars and, most importantly, its unique south-facing location by the sea that was consistently cooled by the gentle sea breezes during the heat of summer. It was one of the island’s earliest resorts.

Naval Station to Summer Resort

During World War II, Mattakeset’s region of Katama served as a U.S. Naval Air and Sea Base. After the war the site was developed into the Katama Shores Inn, which was removed in 1999 to make way for today’s Winnetu.

Mattakesett Revived

The Mattakesett community opened in 1968 as the first home development in Katama. Drawing its name from the 19th century resort that once stood in Katama, the community is still alive and well today and is an integral part of the Winnetu guest experience.

A New Summer Tradition is Born

In the summer of 2000, the Snider family opened the Winnetu Oceanside Resort, carefully designed to reflect the Vineyard’s late-nineteenth century shingle-style character while providing all the modern conveniences guests expect today.

Collectively, our management team has clocked over 148 years of collective service at Winnetu Oceanside Resort. In short, we love what we do and who we do it with. Alongside the 90 associates who join us each summer to make your stay memorable, we know each other, our guests, our resort, and our beautiful island.

Our Family

Little Gem Resorts is a family affair. We first arrived on Martha’s Vineyard more than 50 years ago and have been in love with the island ever since. Three generations of Sniders, starting with Mark’s parents Stanley and Mary Ann, have shaped the Winnetu experience that our guests know and love and we look forward to carrying that tradition forward.
