Do I need a car?

In the summer months, a car is really not necessary — there are plenty of transportation options available to/from the Resort and on the Island. However, for those guests traveling with young children, or staying for a week or more, a car can be a nice convenience.

During the spring and autumn seasons, we do recommend that you bring a car, especially if you wish to explore the Island. If you're just coming for a weekend, and aren't interested in touring, a car really isn't needed.

If you do decide to bring your car over to the Island, auto reservations are required and should be made as soon as possible with the Steamship Authority ferry. If you can't get your first request, ask to have your name put on the Waiting List. It usually works out very well and, more often than not, you'll get the reservation time you desire.

To arrange auto reservations, contact the Steamship Authority by either calling them directly at (508) 477-8600 or visiting their website. Reservations for passengers only are unnecessary.

I'm coming to the Island without a car…What's the easiest way to reach you?

Recommended. We feature a convenient on-Island pick-up/drop-off service for our guests that choose to utilize the "Island Queen" ferry from Falmouth, Massachusetts. The crossing time takes 35 minutes (i.e., the quickest to the Island). Falmouth is centrally located and the Island Queen offers mainland parking within walking distance to the dock. The boat line has guaranteed Winnetu guests parking availability in their lots — a special benefit — so long as a Winnetu voucher is shown to the parking attendant. Mainland parking is $15.00 per day.

To utilize this exclusive service, our guests must pre-reserve it via the On-Line Concierge Page on our Winnetu website. Once there, go to the "VIP/Ferry Transfer" section. Guests who choose not to pre-reserve this amenity via our On-Line Concierge service may utilize the Island Queen ferry on their own, but will not have guaranteed parking privileges or a pick-up on-Island to/from the Resort. (Taxis are available on your own).

What are my choices for other passenger ferry services?

There are several passenger-only ferries that operate between the mainland and three ports on Martha's Vineyard (a.k.a., Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven). Most passenger ferries operate to/from Oak Bluffs, which is a convenient nine miles away from the Winnetu Oceanside Resort.

If you are coming from Massachusetts, you can choose from one of the following ferry services:

  • Falmouth, MA — Oak Bluffs Ferry via the Island Queen, click here
  • Falmouth, MA — Edgartown Ferry via the Pied Piper, click here
  • Woods Hole, MA — Oak Bluffs/Vineyard Haven — via the Steamship Authority Ferry, click here

If you are coming from the West, including Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey (in addition to the above ferry services from Massachusetts), you may also want to consider one of the following ferry services:

  • New Jersey/New York City — Oak Bluffs Ferry — via New England Fast Ferry. Operates every weekend, click here
  • Quonset Point, RI — Oak Bluffs Ferry — via Vineyard Fast Ferry, click here
  • New Bedford, MA — Oak Bluffs/Vineyard Haven — via New England Fast Ferry, click here

If you are coming from, or wish to return to either the mid/lower Cape (Chatham/Hyannis/Provincetown) or Nantucket, you can utilize the following ferry service:

  • Hyannis or Nantucket, MA — Oak Bluffs Ferry — via Hy-Line, click here

I'm arriving in Boston, MA or Providence, RI by air or train and want a car on the Island. What should I do?

If you're arriving in Boston, Massachusetts or Providence, Rhode Island — by air or train and wish to have a car on the Island once you're here — we strongly encourage you to rent a vehicle at your arriving mainland terminal and drive yourself to the Steamship Authority Wharf in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. This option is less expensive than renting on the Island and you will also have a better vehicle selection from which to choose.

To arrange auto reservations, contact the Steamship Authority by either calling them directly at (508) 477-8600 or visiting their website. Reservations for passengers only are unnecessary.
